PURPOSE:
The main purpose of a production/plantmanager at bakery is to oversee the entire production process and ensure that it runs smoothly while hitting company KPI targets. This includes managing staff, overseeing the use of equipment, and ensuring that production targets are met. Ultimately, the goal of a production manager is to deliver high-quality bread products that meet customer demands and expectations while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Staff Management -As a production manager, one of your main responsibilities is to manage the staff at the bakery. This includes hiring, training, and managing supervisors and employees to ensure that they are performing their duties effectively. You will also be responsible for creating work schedules and managing any employee issues or conflicts that may arise.
- Equipment Management- A bakery relies heavily on equipment such as ovens, mixers, and packaging machines. As a production manager, you will be responsible for working with Operational support staff and ensuring that it is functioning properly.
- Production Planning-To ensure the smooth operation of bakery, it is crucial to have a well-planned production schedule. As a production manager, you will be responsible for creating and implementing production plans that meet customer demands and maximize efficiency. This may involve coordinating with other departments, such as sales and logistics, to ensure a seamless production process.
- Quality Control-Maintaining high-quality standards is essential for any bakery. As a production manager, you, in conjunction with the Quality department, will be responsible for implementing quality control measures to ensure that all products meet company and industry standards. This may include conducting regular product inspections and implementing corrective actions when necessary.
- Safety and Compliance-Ensuring a safe working environment is crucial for any facility, including a bakery. As a production manager, you will be responsible for implementing and enforcing safety protocols to protect employees and comply with industry regulations. Ensure compliance with health, safety, required training and environmental regulations.
- Meet Production goals, ensure adherence to production, packaging and warehouse standards.
- Balance line capacity loading across the plant.
- Manage the movement of goods into and out of production facilities, meet packaging and shipping goals.
- Ensure proper contingency plans are in place so that if operations are disrupted, down time of our production facilities minimized.
- Develop, implement maintain initiatives that supports sales staff, contribute to operations efficiencies, reduce waste and /or improve the quality and safety record of bakery operations.
- Ensure systems and processes are in place to produce high-quality products on time and in a cost- effective manner.
- Define implement capacity definition and production planning.
- Maintain excellent employee relations through effective communications, coaching, training, and development.
- Provide leadership for problem resolution to facilitate fast improvements and improved working relations.
- Ensure all production, packaging and warehouse employees are adequately trained in all relevant areas.
- Work collaboratively with other members of the management team to set and achieve goals for the bakery as a whole.
- SQF Compliance- This position is responsible for reporting food safety and quality problems to the supervisor, The SQF Practioner or directly to senior management.
- Ensure compliance with company standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, OSHA, safety, and complete on time delivery at the lowest possible cost.
- Work in partnership with the quality department to achieve the highest possible external audit score annually.
- Manage compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Plan and prioritize production schedule to ensure maximum performance and minimum delay.
- Determine raw materials needed to cover production demand.
- Obtain output information (number of finished products, percentage of defectives etc.)
- Prepare and submit status and performance reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
- Minimum 5 years' experience managing a small to medium sized food manufacturing plant - experience in the bakery industry a definite asset.
- Bachelor's degree in Business or related field is preferred.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations, HACCP, PCQI, SQF Class and Food GMP implementation (in a bakery environment preferred).
- A good grasp of inventory management (cycle counting, materials management, etc.).
SKILLS
- Technical Skills- As a production manager in a bakery, it is essential to have a strong understanding of the technical aspects of the production line. This includes knowledge of the equipment, processes, and techniques used in bread production. A production manager should also be familiar with safety regulations and quality control standards related to food production.
Additionally, having knowledge of specialized software or systems used for tracking inventory, scheduling production runs, and monitoring production data can greatly enhance a production manager's effectiveness.
- Leadership Skills-A bakery requires strong leadership to ensure that all employees are working in sync towards the same goal. A production manager should possess excellent communication skills to effectively convey goals, objectives, and expectations to the team. They should also be able to motivate and delegate tasks efficiently, ensuring that each employee is working to their full potential.
- Time Management Skills- In a fast-paced bakery facility, time management is crucial for meeting production targets and ensuring timely delivery of products. A production manager should have exceptional organizational skills and be able to prioritize tasks effectively. They should also be proficient in creating production schedules and managing resources efficiently.
- Problem-Solving Skills-As with any manufacturing facility, problems are bound to arise in a bakery. A good production manager should have the ability to identify issues, analyze them, and come up with effective solutions quickly. This requires critical thinking skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure. A production manager should also have a thorough understanding of the entire bread production process, allowing them to identify potential problems before they occur and implement preventative measures.
- Continuous Learning- The food industry is constantly evolving, and new technologies, techniques, and regulations are introduced regularly. A successful production manager in a bakery should be open to learning and adapting to these changes. This could involve attending industry conferences, reading relevant publications, and seeking out educational opportunities.
